Sectional Tanks โ€“ Technical

ACCESSORIES & CONNECTIONS

Three connections and one hinged and lockable manhole are provided as standard. Special connections can be supplied to customersโ€™ requirements and a full range of accessories such as internal and external cat ladders, extra manholes, ventilators, float level indicators, sumps and vortex inhibitors etc. are available. Internal divisions (which can be located virtually anywhere), baffles, raised inlet chambers and other special requirements can also be provided. We recommend that, where an internal cat ladder is required, a separate manhole be specified to facilitate easy access.

SUPPORTS

Support walls or universal I beams at either 1220mm or 990mm centres (depending on the plate size used) are required in one direction only, preferably across the width of the tank. It is not necessary to taper the tops of the support walls providing that they are not more than 230 mm thick. The walls must be a minimum of 150mm longer than the width of the tank and for tanks exceeding 2440 mm deep a steel cover plate is recommended.

THICKNESS

To allow for assembly and maintenance a clearance not less than 550mm is required around, above and below the tank.

Thickness:ย 2.5mm
Width:ย 610mm
Cover plates are shaped to provide a tight overlapping fit.

To enable maintenance of the tank without interruption of the water supply, tanks can be fitted with a division. Division walls are manufactured from standard tank panels and are designed to operate with either compartment empty.

All internal fittings are fabricated from steel and are carefully designed to ensure the structural strength and rigidity of each tank. Most items are jig assembled for dimensional precision, ease of fitment and assembly are ensured.

All washers, nuts and bolts are high tensile grade.

Special profile rubber gasket is used between tank panels. Rubber bungs, silicone and mastic compound are used at other specific places. NB: All sealing material is non-toxic and non -tainting.

All steel components are hot dipped galvanised to internationally recognised standards after manufacture. Non-standard finishers can be provided on receipt of specific requirements. The key to maximising the life of a pressed steel tank is the choice of its protective coating system and an effective maintenance programme.

View pressed steel tanks are fitted with the following fittings as standard:
  • Roof Air Vent
  • Internal access ladder on tanks deeper than 1220mm
  • External access ladder on tanks deeper than 1220mm
  • 460mm x 460mm roof access manhole with lockable hinged lid.
  • Four connections (Inlet, Outlet, Overflow & Drain)
  • Float level indicator
  • Raised manhole (float valve chamber)
  • Sump
  • Side access manhole
  • Internal bell mouth overflow
Pipe connections are welded to tank panels at our works before galvanising. Therefore customers should supply details of the positioning, sizes and type of pipe connection that are required.
Standard types of connections are BSP screwed sockets and flanges on stub pipes. Preferred flanges are SABS 1123 100Kpa or BS 4509 10 Bar.Pipe connections can be fitted to virtually any point on the tank panel but care should be taken to ensure that pipes will not foul internal or external supports or steelwork.

All foundations for both ground and elevated tanks should be designed by a competent engineer to suit the site conditions.

The key to a lifelong trouble free tank service rests on foundations that provide a level solid platform for the tank, which will remain stable over time.

Plinths or dwarf wall is constructed of brick or concrete. These are the most economical supports and should be built in one direction only beneath each seam of the tank. They should exceed the length or with of the tank by 300mm overall (150mm each side). They should a minimum height of 450mm with a distance of 1220mm from centre to centre.

After constructing the plinths or dwarf walls, steel capping strips are placed on top of the wall. These must be levelled using solid packers and then grouted into position using a quality grout capable of withstanding the forces shown on foundation load table.

When using brick work one need to note that loads imposed by tanks exceeding 2440mm are considerable and the quality of bricks and workmanship must be sufficient to carry the loads. An alternative method of support is to use steel supports.

It is very important to take note of the type of soil one is constructing in. Different soils will need different types of foundations. For example: soils such as clay have a low load bearing capacity and may need a raft type foundation. That is why it is paramount to have professional soil analyses performed before construction commences.
